"Fast & Furious 11 Takes It 'Back to Basics' with New Villain and Smaller Budget"
According to a report by insider Jeff Sneider, the highly
anticipated Fast 11 is set to be the conclusive chapter in the enduring street
racing/action franchise. Vin Diesel is expected to reprise his role as Dominic
Toretto for one final adventure, characterized as a "back-to-basics"
sequel to 2023's Fast X. The upcoming installment will reportedly eschew the
more extravagant elements introduced in recent films, such as space escapades
and seemingly superhuman characters, to focus on "one last job,"
whether it involves a heist or race remains uncertain.
As a noteworthy shift, Fast 11 is anticipated to operate on
a smaller budget due to declining box office returns. Sneider suggests the
budget will not exceed $200 million, a considerable reduction compared to Fast
X, which boasted a staggering $340 million budget before marketing. Notably,
this change aligns with the franchise's early days when the original The Fast
and the Furious was made for a modest $38 million.
Contrary to initial expectations, Fast 11 might not directly
continue the storyline from Fast X, which left fans hanging with various
cliffhangers, including Dom and his son trapped at the bottom of an
explosive-rigged dam. Originally planned to seamlessly pick up from the
previous film's conclusion, Sneider hints at a potential introduction of a new
villain in Fast 11, aligning with the movie's "back to basics" ethos.
Interestingly, a spinoff film titled Fast & Furious
Presents: Hobbs & Reyes was announced in June 2023, starring Dwayne
Johnson's Luke Hobbs and featuring Jason Momoa's Dante Reyes. The spinoff, set
between Fast X and Fast 11, could provide closure to Dante Reyes' storyline,
leaving Fast 11 with a fresh start to conclude the beloved franchise. The
spinoff is expected to address the post-credits scene of Fast X, where Dante Reyes
threatens Hobbs, creating anticipation for the resolution of this subplot.
While Fast X is available for digital rental or purchase,
Hobbs & Reyes lacks a confirmed release date. Fast 11 is scheduled to hit
theaters on April 4, 2025, promising an end to the Fast & Furious saga.
